Going Places Summary: Going Places is a story written by A.R.Barton that discusses about teenagers and their dreams. Far fetched from the reality, the teen age period is all about aspirations, the desire to reach the sky, do the undone, see the unseen. They believe to achieve the impossible. Mostly, at this age, they have their role models whom they worship as their hero.

In the story, Sophie, who comes from a lower middle class family is a teenager who believes in her dreams. Her dream is to own the finest boutique in the city. But there is no money and means by which she can do it. However, her friend and classmate, Jansie is a practical girl, well aware of the realities of life. She asks her not to indulge into such fantasies. In order to have a boutique, one needs a lot of money. Sophie aspires to run a store where she will work as a manager and she will save the money to have her own boutique. She happens to be an incorrigible dreamer. Sometimes she dreams to be an actress and sometimes a fashion designer. Sophie’s hero is a young football player named Danny Casey. Her thoughts use to surround over him and she began to believe that she has actually met Danny Casey in real. Her continuous thoughts for Danny Casey becomes the cause of her hopes and disappointments.

1. Describe Sophie’s Fascination for ‘the places and the vast world’.

Being a young school girl, Sophie loves to dwell in her realm of dreams. Most of her dreams are beyond her reach. Her ambitions have no relation with the harsh realities of life. She thinks of having a boutique. She wants to have the most amazing shop this city has ever seen. Then she entertains the idea of being an actress as there was real money in it.
